PROJECT PROPOSAL

I am fascinated by crucial moments of liberation in post colonial societies. In these moments of simultaneous destruction and creation, the reclamation of the humanity of the formerly oppressed is moved from the periphery to the center and matters of truth and justice are discussed openly.

I am proposing to research and create a series of work derived from the 1995 Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa and 1982 post liberation committees of Mozambique, by utilizing the tools and lens of Black Quantum Futurism. A series of theoretical frameworks and methodologies created by Camae Ayewa and Rasheedah Phillips, Black Quantum Futurism posit that there is "manipulation of space-time in order to see into possible futures, and/or collapse space-time into a desired future in order to bring about that future’s reality."

Using Black Quantum Futurism as a guide, I want to re-envision crucial moments of liberation in post colonial societies to explore possible futures. The works created will use the mediums of photography, sound, and film.

RECAP OF ADVISOR MEETING 9/22/22

I met with my advisor Kevin Jerome Everson via Zoom on Thursday, September 22nd. I presented my proposal and we discussed possible film subjects and structure of films. I presented two ideas for experimental short films - in both cases I want create scenarios in which minor characters become the center of the work. Kevin stressed the importance of developing a context to use historical visual and audio materials. "The work should be an event not an indictment."

RECAP OF ADVISOR MEETING 9/28/22

I met with my advisor Abbéy Odunlami via Zoom on Thursday, September 28th. I presented my proposal and we discussed my selection of South Africa and Mozambique. Abbéy suggested that I research Rwanda because of the genocide and the subsequent holistic policies for rebuilding the society.
